STAR STUDENTS DEVELOP A LIFELONG LOVE OF LEARNING

The STAR School's strong academic program is built upon these principles:

  • A "no excuses" philosophy. We will do everything in our power to ensure each student's success.
  • A strong parent-school partnership: we support families in getting the best possible education for their children.
  • Curriculum is based on current research and Arizona State Standards, adapted to the unique needs of people in our area.
  • Multi-age classrooms (Pre-school, K, 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8) provide flexibility that allows each child to learn at his or her own pace.
  • Students learn through hands-on projects that relate to life in our community.
  • Methology and materials include CREDE, Voices, and top-rated reading, math and spelling texts.
  • Place-based learning including the Native Science Project is implemented throughout the school.

Educational technology integrated at all grade levels

  • All classes have access to computer assisted learning and the latest technology including digital photography, video, and SMART Boards.
  • High speed wireless internet is available throughout the campus for student, staff and community use.
  • Refurbished computer systems and training programs are available for families.

Education of the whole child

  • We offer nutritious breakfasts, lunches, snacks, and activities that promote a healthy lifestyle.
  • Students take on roles as mentors and leaders.
  • We appreciate cultures in our area and world-wide, and enthusiastically encourage the sharing of traditional knowledge.
  • Instruction is offered in sports, music, crafts, drama, and Navajo language.
  • Students learn in cooperative groups, developing the communication and problem solving skills needed in today's world.

A commitment to our community

  • The STAR School offers a personalized alternative to large public schools, at no cost to families.
  • Parents of students have opportunities for employment.
  • Our location is four miles from the Navajo Nation border, between Leupp and Flagstaff.
  • We provide bus transportation within a wide area including Leupp, Tolani Lake, and Flagstaff.
  • A small school can offer personal attention and caring-- every child really matters to us.
  • Families are invited to workshops, performances and community events.
  • STAR School staff are available to talk with families and respond to their needs.
  • The STAR School is an independent charter school designed by and for people who live in this area.
